TAI India

Summary of Activities:
In India, the Access Initiative Indicators were first used by the Society for Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA), in 2001 in New Dehli as a pilot study in the field of pollution control. A review of the Pilot Assessment was undertaken in 2003 and an outreach strategy was launched in 2004 by the Idma Foundation for Sustainable Development (IFSD) from Chandigarh, India. The findings, titled "Capturing Progress in Implementing Access to Information, Participation and Justice in Indian Environmental Sturcutre in Pollution Control" were realeased in 2004. The event was also used to provide introductory input to NGOs from Sri Lanka and Nepal.
As a follow-up to the findings, Idma launched another publication, titled "A Guide to Indian Laws on Pollution Control and Access to Information, Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters". Looking into the geographical and cultrual diversity of India, the Chandigarh luanch was also used as an opportunity to discuss the indicator approach among larger Indian NGO groups and a losse coalition, "TAI-India" was formed in order to look into perspectives of carrying out more assessments in India. The TAI-India later organized a follow up meeting in Bangalore, hosted by the Environment Support Group (ESG). The Bangalore Report provides the background and plans for future actions.
