The message in this video is wonderfully clear. The script implies that Sunita lives in a developing country; yet the situation described is precisely how governments across Canada – from the federal government to provincial (state) and municipal governments operate.

Canadian governments have become increasingly secretive in recent years, despite ATI laws (which the federal government and its agencies are notorious for disregarding). As in the USA, Canada nor routinely imposes privacy-invasive measures regardless of (un)constituionality, (il)legality, or inability to demonstrate any valid need; but the government declares them matters of ‘national security’ and, under that veil, does what it wishes.

Governments across Canada do offer painfully brief ‘consultation’ periods from time to time, but only in relation to a small fraction of initiatives and proposed legislation – and the consultation periods are seldom publicized. Furthermore, the usual form of ‘consultation’ now is to request public consultation after all decisions have been made, and disregard all public input.

Seems to me that TAI is much needed in Canada!!
