DPI Conference launch mentions Principle 10 Regional Conventions
Today a Press Conference was held introducing the 64th Annual UN DPI/NGO Conference to be held in Bonn, Germany 3-5 September 2011. Speakers included Kiyo Akasaka, Under-Secretary-General for the Department of Public Information; H.E. Peter Wittig, Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations; Donna Keher, Chief of the Partnerships and Communications Division of the UN Volunteers programme in Bonn; and Felix Dodds, Chair of the 64th Annual UN DPI/NGO Conference. The DPI Conference is now recognised as one of the most important Conferences for Civil Society in preparing for Rio +20 and celebrates ” Volunteerism”. It is estimated that 2000 NGO’s from 100 countries will take part in the conference. This sets a record in terms of attendance. Felix Dodds as chair of the Conference spoke boldly about Rio +20 and stated “there are three suggestions for Conventions - one is to look at a regional approach to Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration- it looks likely that Latin America is going down a similar route, there is a recommendation in front of the regional meeting in September to create a Regional Convention similar to Europe”.
