Successful side event of TAI at the MOP4

Today at 8:30 (local time) The Access Initiative has held a remarkably successful side event at the MOP4 of the Aarhus Convention. After the presentations of Michael Ewing (TAI Ireland), Barbara Ruis (UNEP), Jeremy Wates (EEB) and Kiril Ristovski (TAI Macedonia), the 30+ audience had a chance to discuss the most important aspects of global implementation of P10. Certainly there was not enough time to analyze all matters in detail, however, the most important points were raised. There seemed to be agreement that the EU’s most recent Communication on Rio 2012 is fundamentally disappointing, diregarding totally the issue of access rights on the national level. People reacted with interest to practical manifestations of a need for a regional convention from the LA region, i.e. the 2011 March speech of Guillermo Acuna of UN ECLAC. Later in the plenary TAI expressed its satisfaction that the concept “there are more than one way to promote P10 globally than just accession of non UNECE countries to the Aarhus Convention” has infiltrated the texts and the language of the meeting.
