Reunión de Participa y comunidad de Los Choros

Entre el 6 y el 10 de junio, el equipo de Participa viajó a Los Choros, localidad de pesca artesanal y cultivo de olivos en la región de Coquimbo, el llamado Norte Chico chileno.

En dicha localidad, está la reserva natural Punta de Choros, donde entre otras especies habita la mayor colonia a nivel mundial del Pinguino de Humbold, que se encuentra en peligro de extinción. En dicho lugar, MODEMA, organización local parte de la coalición TAI Chile, ha trabajado desde hace años para proteger la zona y el modo de vida tradicional de sus habitantes, que se ha visto amenazada por tres proyectos de centrales hidroeléctricas que se intentan construir de manera simultánea en un radio de 60 kilómetros.

Es por ello que hoy más que nunca llevar adelante una estrategia de Incidencia que permita evitar la construcción de dichas centrales resulta urgente, y ya se está trabajando con la comunidad con herramienta elaborada por TAI.

Between June 6-10, the Participa team traveled to Los Choros, an old-fashioned fishing and olive-growing town in the Coquimbo Region, called the Little North of Chile.

In this town there is a natural reserve called Punta de Choros, which is home to, among many other species, the largest colony of Humboldt Penguin in the world, which is an endangered species. On this island reserve, MODEMA, a local organization that makes up part of the TAI coalition in Chile, has worked for years on protecting the area and the traditional way of life of its inhabitants, which has been threatened by three hydroelectric power plant projects that are to be installed simultaneously within a radius of 60 kilometers.

For this reason today more than ever it is urgent to generate an Advocacy Strategy that would allow for the community to stop the construction of these plants, and we are now working with the community on a tool established by TAI.
